Of the 24 Jain Thirthankars, only number nineteen, Mallinatha, is female, the remaining twenty-three are male. Natha means lord or god, Dev or Prabha also means god. Of the twenty-four,the last three are actual historical figures and rest are mythological. Twenty-two, Aristnemi, was a cousin to Krishna (famous from Mahabharata) and perhaps the first person to say it is wrong to kill or destroy animals and hence wrong to eat meat and that humans should be vegetarian. The actual time of the Mahabharata and related stories are not known, according to Hindu legend it was about 4000 thousand years ago and according to Jain legend about 3500 years ago. The Parasnath story is more known and confirmed. He is supposed to have lived about 2800 years ago and it seems he laid out the basic tenants of Jainism. Mahavir’s history is also well recorded and he was a contemporary of Buddha. (Or perhaps slightly before him, about 50 years or so.) Mahavir is the one who is historically credited with establishing the Jain philosophy and principals as they are known today.
